Find out why the famous Swiss Artist Augusto Giacometti is called “the Master of Colour”. He was a pioneer in abstract painting and famed for both his stained glass windows and wall murals. We will visit 3 of Zurich’s historic old town churches:

the monumental Grossmünster church, a key site of the Swiss Reformation and, with its 2 prominent towers, the landmark of Zurich. Here we will admire Giacometti’s stained glass church windows side-by-side with Sigmar Polke’s more contemporary windows which incorporate the use of sliced agate.

the less-known, but exquisite Wasserkirche (Water Church) with a highly unusual feature in its Giacometti windows...

and the Fraumünster (Women’s Minster) built on the site of a former women’s monastery, known for its Marc Chagall windows, but with an equally beautiful Giacometti window.

As we stroll through the narrow, cobbled lanes and pause to enjoy several panoramic views and city squares, we will stop at several city institutions to enjoy other Giacometti artworks.

In conclusion we will visit the Giacometti murals in the entrance hall of a local Zurich police station. Here you can immerse yourself in an important 20th century Swiss work of art. These 5 wall murals and 14 cupola ceilings are a powerful explosion of colourful floral motifs in what was once the cellar of an orphanage. It is a highlight of the Tour.
Following this Zurich walking tour, you may wish to visit the Zürich Art Gallery (Kunsthaus) to view some of Augusto Giacometti’s abstract paintings. At the same time, you can see the famous sculptures of another member of the famous Swiss Giacometti artistic dynasty, Augusto’s first cousin, Alberto Giacometti.
